preinstalled!
What is Urchin?
Urchin is a web analytics system
designed to enable businesses to easily analyze the traffic
to their website(s) and create detailed, insightful, and intuitive
reports. Basically, Urchin is a log-analysis program, but
its sophisticated unique visitor reporting goes far beyond
what was available up until now.
Urchin represents more than 6 years
of development, and is in our view the most advanced web analytics
package available today. Combining proven datacenter-class
performance with unprecedented ease-of-use, Urchin is the
best choice for businesses of all sizes.
URCHIN TRACKS SEARCH ENGINE KEYWORDS
AND PHRASES!
What can Urchin do for you?
Traffic Report: Daily Graph
Also monthly/weekly/annually
The Daily Graph report is a basic
bar graph that shows you a quick, at-a-glance, day-by-day
overview of the amount of activity on your website for the
current Date Range up to the last day with at least one hit.
The X axis shows the days of the week, by day and date, and
the Y axis indicates the total number for that day of whichever
parameter you are viewing, e.g. Sessions, Pageviews, etc.
The actual number for each day is displayed at the top of
the bar.
Why this report is useful?
You can see at a glance the patterns
of traffic on your site without any numbers analysis. By comparing
week to week, you can quickly and easily see if there is a
usage pattern by day or if traffic during a certain day or
week was impacted by something else, such as a promotion or
network trouble.
Referrals: Top Referrals
The
list is ranked according to the number of Sessions from each
referring site, beginning with the site that sent the most
traffic. Each line shows the name of the referrer, the number
of Sessions from that referrer, and the percentage of the
total of all the referrers. A bar graph on each line gives
a visual representation of that percentage.
The top 10 referring URLs (web addresses)
display by default, unless there are fewer than ten. To change
that number, see "How to change the data display"
below.
Why this report is useful
This report tells you which links
to your site are most active. This is extremely useful for
determining the efficacy of banner ads, link exchanges, and
for finding all the various ways people are arriving at your
site. By knowing precisely where your visitors are coming
from, you are able to tune your promotional efforts and search
engine placements to maximize your site's effectiveness. You
can also draw some conclusions about your users based on where
they're coming from.
Domains: Top Domains
This
"top 10"-type report lists the networks that were
responsible for the most Visitor Sessions on the site. Since
some IP addresses cannot be resolved, this report does not
represent all the Sessions recorded by the server, but it
does give a fairly accurate picture of the distribution of
traffic from the various ISP, government, military, and foreign
networks.
The list is ranked according to the
number of Sessions received from the domain, beginning with
the one responsible for the most traffic. Each line shows
the name of the domain, the number of Sessions from each domain,
and the percentage of the total for all the domains. A bar
graph on each line gives a visual representation of that percentage.
The top 10 entries display by default,
unless there are fewer than ten. To change that number, see
"How to change the data display" below.
Why this report is useful
Depending on the type of site you
operate, you may need to know if government (".gov"),
military (".mil"), or foreign domains (such as ".uk")
are visiting your site. Additionally, a large contingent of
international users might warrant localization of your site's
content to make things easier for your non-English speaking
visitors.
Visitors & Sessions: Unique
Visitors Snapshot
This
report is a breakdown of all Visitors within a specified date
range. It tells you how many of your website's Unique Visitors
have visited before (Prior Unique Visitors), how many are
visiting for the first time, and the number of Untrackable
IP-based Visitors.
The Unique Visitors Snapshot is intended
as a quick look at your site's overall visitation, broken
down by visitor type. The different visitor types are:
* First Time Unique Visitors - those
visitors who are trackable (unique), but who have not been
recorded as visiting your site previous to the current Date
Range
* Prior Unique Visitors- those visitors who are trackable
and who have visited your site during the current Date Range
and any time prior to this timeframe
Why this report is useful
Website operators can tell immediately
the extent to which their site is attracting new or return
unique visitors. Have your promotional efforts been effective
at drawing in new viewers? Is your content compelling enough
to bring visitors back to your site? This snapshot may indicate
that an update or change of strategy is advisable.
